The Abbesses

Co-Abbess

Rev. Mo. Alaina Alexander

Alaina has been called to a life of poetry, beauty, and intimate ministry that has pulled her inexorably toward the work of justice and liberation.
As a Co-Abbess of Earthfire Abbey she lives in common and community, seeking to embody daily the radical hospitality of her faith.
She is a mystic of interior spaces, finding divinity in humanity, the struggles of ongoing resistance, and the works of the earth.
Heavy with stories, she is a reluctant oracle, ardent poet, obligate author, haunt of God, prophet of the margins, and conjurer of cream soups.

All in all, Alaina spends her time living gratuitously and unapologetically.

Abba Lot visited Abba Joseph and said to him, “Abba, to the best of my ability I do a little fasting, praying, and meditating. I maintain stillness and purge my thoughts to the best of my ability. What else should I be doing?
Standing up, the elder stretched out his hands to heaven, and his fingers became like ten lamps of fire; and he said
to him, “If you are willing, become utterly changed into fire."
